Background
I was part of the inaugural class of fellows of the National Association of Consumer Advocates (NACA), the national organization of lawyers who represent consumers. As a fellow, I worked on the plaintiff side of consumer class actions: drafting complaints and motions and attending hearings and depositions.
My legal training has focused on consumer protection law and class action litigation, the laws that govern credit reporting, banking and payments, landlord and tenant relationships, and deceptive business practices, and the procedures that let people hold a company accountable when it treats many customers the same wrong way.
I earned my law degree at Stetson University College of Law and my undergraduate degree at the University of Florida. Outside the law, I founded Keylime Strategies, a Tampa strategy and compliance firm.
Why I started McMillan Law
Most people have never heard the phrase "consumer protection law," but almost everyone has lived it: a credit report that blames them for a stranger's debt, a banking app that lets a thief empty an account, a landlord who keeps a deposit and stops answering the phone, a business that promised one thing and delivered another.
Most people in those situations assume nothing can be done, because paying a lawyer by the hour to fight over a few hundred or a few thousand dollars doesn't add up. The laws behind these cases were written with that problem in mind. Many of them let a consumer who wins recover attorney's fees from the company, which is why I can take these cases on contingency. You don't pay me unless you win.
How I handle a case
- Deadlines first. Some of these claims expire in a year or less, and a deposit objection window is only 15 days.
- You don't pay me unless you win. No attorney's fees or costs owed to me unless you recover. Every term is in a written agreement before you sign.
- Straight answers. If I don't think you have a claim, I'll tell you, and why, so you can decide what to do next.
- Individual and class claims. When a company does the same thing to many people, a class action can be the right tool. I look at every case with both in mind.
- Plain English. You'll know where your case stands at each step.
