This website is attorney advertising. It is published by McMillan Law PLLC, a Florida law firm, to describe the consumer law matters I handle and how to reach me.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements.

The pages, guides, sample letters, and tools on this site are general information about Florida and federal consumer law. They are not legal advice about your situation. The right answer for you depends on your facts, your documents, and your deadlines, and a lawyer can only give you advice after reviewing them.

Do not act, or decide not to act, based only on something you read here. If you have a legal problem, talk to a lawyer licensed in your state.

No attorney-client relationship until you sign an agreement

Reading this website, calling the office, sending an e-mail, or submitting the case review form does not make you my client. An attorney-client relationship with McMillan Law PLLC begins only when you and I both sign a written engagement agreement.

Until that agreement is signed, I have not agreed to represent you, and I am not watching any deadline on your behalf. Deadlines to file a claim can be short, so do not wait on a response from me to protect your rights.

Sending information and documents

If you'd like me to review a possible case, please use the case review form. It asks for the basics and lets you upload documents related to your problem, such as credit reports, dispute letters, bank or app statements, a lease, or a landlord's notice. I treat what you send as confidential and use it to check for conflicts of interest and evaluate your matter. Sending it does not create an attorney-client relationship, which exists only once an engagement agreement is signed.

Please never send passwords, and feel free to black out Social Security numbers and full account numbers before uploading. Please send documents about a possible case through the form rather than through social media messages.

The same rule can also apply differently depending on the facts, the dates involved, and the court.

The security deposit deadline calculator

The Florida security deposit deadline calculator gives an informational estimate based only on the dates you enter. It is not legal advice, and it does not account for every exception or fact that can change a deadline.

For example, the Florida deadlines run from the termination of the rental agreement, which is not always the day you moved out, and questions about how and when a notice was sent can change the analysis. Do not rely on the calculator alone to decide when to act. If money or a deadline is at stake, talk to a lawyer.

Referrals and fees

Your case may be referred to, or handled together with, another lawyer. If that happens, I will tell you first and the arrangement will be in writing.

Fee terms for the consumer cases described on this site: You don't pay me unless you win. I take these cases on contingency: no attorney's fees and no case costs owed to me unless you recover money. If a case is lost, a court can sometimes order the losing side to pay the other side's court costs, and some Florida laws, including the security deposit and deceptive practices statutes, also let the winner recover attorney's fees from the loser. I explain that risk before anything is filed, and every term is in a written agreement before you sign.
